I do not claim to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the era in which Kugane is based, though I have done as much research as I have been able, and continue to do so as it is a subject I'm deeply interested in.The popular western depictions of geiko are erroneously conflated with prostitutes and oiran. Oiran were courtesans for the upper class, while geiko were entertainers for the lower class and were not expected to engage in sex work. While there is was no expectation of working geiko to stay chaste, and while it is true that there was documented evidence of geiko both voluntarily and involuntarily participating in the sex industry, this should not obscure the fact that all pre-war geiko underwent years of intense training in a variety of classical arts, as well as hospitality to become masters of their trade.Geiko have relied historically on these skills that they've honed over years and years of experience, rather than on their sexuality, to establish their role in society. Much thanks is owed to her mother's impressed knowledge of salve-making and botanicals.Later, she would fall in with the hearers and become respected for her natural inclination towards the healing arts.

❝ In 1545, before the Garlean occupation of Doma, a young Raen girl resided in a small village off the coast of Yanxia.Refia was born to a Suzume Wasaishi of Sui-no-Sato and a Hannish silk merchant, Kartal Deryaoglu.At the tender age of seven, the Garlean empire would march upon Yanxian soil and raze the village in which they lived.Suzume, in refusing to give away her hiding place, was arrested by a Centurion’s infantry and never seen again. When Refia gave chase, she met with the Centurion who taunted her with Suzume’s golden wedding ring he had taken as a trophy.With her mother’s kidnapping by Garlean hands, and her father away at sea, Refia was bereft of options.Sensing an opportunity in the aftermath of war, it was confederate pirates who found and smuggled the young girl into Kugane, and sold her to the Momoka okiya for the price of a bag of rice. It was a hard life, and she would grow to believe her father a craven who left his family to die in the occupation.Inside the karyukai she was to be trained in the traditional arts of song, dance and hospitality. At fifteen she would make her debut as a full-fledged maiko, where she would receive the geimyo, Tsuna, by her okiya mother.

By seventeen she caught the eye of an upstart of a Xaela man by the name of Odgerel Ejinn. Being of the wealthy merchant class, he followed her career with a vaunted interest, often requesting her services until the day she turned her collar to the stark white of a geiko. It was then he proposed to become her danna, or patron, and would later ask for her hand in marriage in exchange for freeing her of her debts.Two winters before the end of her tenure, Tsuna and her okiya sister were tasked to entertain for the Garlean embassy. In a twist of fate, her client was to be the same Centurion as all those years ago, and upon seeing her mother's ring again Tsuna would take the lives of both soldiers, and set fire to the evidence. As a wanted woman, she was left with little choice but to flee the sekiseigumi and leave Kugane for the west.Once in Eorzea, bereft of coin and notable experience, she would spend her years subjecting herself to base jobs in order to make ends meet. On the shores of Vylbrand, she would become versed in Hannish dance, leading to the seedy venues of Ul'dah where the Calamity would then send her life into turmoil once more.
